The Brgy. Chairman, Adonis B. Manuel, learned from the students enrolled in the College of Teacher Education (CTE)  at  Northwestern University, Cherry Mae Ranga,  Chairman’s neighbor and Romelyn dela Cruz of the Community Extension Services on Tree Planting and Literacy Program.  The Chairman was very interested with the projects.  The two students told to the CTE  community extension  coordinator, Ms. Flordelina B. Utleg, and she suggested to the students that the brgy. Chairman should write a Request Letter.  The brgy. Chairman made a letter of request and sent it to Ms. Utleg through  Cherry Mae Ranga.  The coordinator submitted to the Director of Community Extension Services, Dr. Rudy Bareng.  He told  the coordinator that he will discuss in the Board Meeting.  The coordinator prayed to the Almighty God that the request would be granted.  After one week, the result came out and it was a very successful result.  The request was approved.

On September 9, 2011at 9:00 A.M. Mr. Michael Jay A. Calaramo, the NWU Ecosystem Management and Development Officer  Dr. Rudy Bareng, the Director of Community and Extension Services, Ms. Catalina Exmundo, Assistant Director of Community Extension Center, Ms. Teresita A. Domingo, the Extension Researcher and Ms. Flordelina B. Utleg, the CTE-SO Adviser and Community Extension Coordinator went to Caribiquib.  They had a meeting to coordinate with the barangay officials headed by Bgy. Chairman Adonis Manuel.  Ms. Exmundo discussed the different activities to be held in Caribquib on September 24, 2011 like seminar on personality development, assist in putting up a barangay nursery, planting flowering plants and livelihood program.

The group saw that some of the barangay folks are doing the Superman which will have 320 meters long with a speed of 90kph.

Professor Ma. Teresa Carbonell of the graduate school led the discussion on parenting.  They discussed about values.  The students of ECE 207 gave their lectures to the parents of Caribquib, Banna, Ilocos Norte.  They gave lectures about parent involvement in the education of their children.  They shared problems that they encountered in school, with the teachers as well as in their child’s behavior and study habits. They gave advice to the parents on what interventions they could do to improve their children’s study habits, etc.

The parents in the said barangay were so cooperative and they were very thankful because they were able to gain knowledge on parenting.

The students were also thankful for allowing them to share their knowledge on what they have learned in the course and shared their experiences as teachers.  They felt fulfilled because the parents, the people, the Brgy. Chairman and the officers could learn from them.


Ms. Utleg and Ms. Leticia Chiong, the adviser of PESDO led the other group of students to the mountain to plant the mahogany seedlings.  The students of Caribquib National High School joined the activity.  They were so happy in joining and Ms. Utleg took their names.  She promised that they will be given a certificate.
At the end, as a sign of gratitude the students distributed simple tokens and snacks for the parents.

Ms. Exmundo discussed with the mayor and other municipality officials about the continuous tree planting and landscaping project of Northwestern University  that will be done in Paraiso  ti  Caribquib,.  The Mayor told them that they can do everything for the improvement of the place.  He also informed them that the DILG has a counterpart amounting to One million pesos and also the municipality will give also One million pesos for the management of the tourism industry and also in the plan to put up a souvenir shop.
Ms. Exmundo requested from the Mayor to finance the reproduction of flyers to promote the project and he was very much willing.

The College of Teacher Education Student Organization (CTE-SO), Physical Education Sports Development Organization (PESDO) group left the university campus at 8:00 o’clock in the morning headed by the CTE-SO adviser and Community Extension Coordinator, Prof. Flordelina B. Utleg, PESDO adviser, Prof. Leticia Lourd Chiong, Manager of the Ecotourism Park and Botanical Garden, Mr. Michael Jay Calaramo and the Assistant Director of Community Extension, Ms. Catalina Exmundo.
They dropped by the market to buy eleven (11) kilos of rambutan.  Mr. Calaramo demonstrated how to eat without damaging the seed.  The purpose of this was for the barangay nursery. On their way going to Caribquib, Prof. Chiong and Mariecris Duldulao, the CTE-SO treasurer distributed the rambutan to the group. The students were happy as they ate the rambutan. Their delight was doubled as they eaten fully all the fruits without damaging the seeds

After this, they carried all the seedlings to the area where they would be planted.

The CTE group headed by the CTE-SO Adviser and Community Extension Coordinator, Prof.Flordelina B. Utleg left Banna Jitney Terminal at 7:00 o’clock in the morning.  When they reached the Barangay Hall, the group of the Manager of Ecotourism Park of Northwestern University, Mr. Michael Jay Calaramo,  was there already.  The group of Ms. Utleg and Mr. Calaramo had picture taking before Mr. Calaramo’s group went to ParaisotiCaribquib for tree plantingand landscaping.

Utleg left Banna Jeepney Terminal at 7:00 o’clock in the morning.  When they reached the Barangay Hall, Mr. Michael Jay Calaramo, the Manager of Ecotourism Park of Northwestern University, was there already.   


The group of Ms. Utleg waited for the barangay officials to finish their monthly regular session.  When the session was finished, they started the seminar on Personality Development with the topics on “Positive Attitude” and “How to Entertain Tourists/Visitors, Dos and Don’ts”.

The seminar started by a prayer led by Ms. Nicolasa Evangelista, a Kagawad member followed by a welcome address byDelfina Vicente, also a Kagawad member.

The members of the group distributed the copy of the topics to all of the participants.  Prof. Utleggreeted them before she started the seminar. She explained line by line and the participants were very participative during the discussion.  All of them reacted when she was discussing on “Know how to say I love you”.  She explained that saying “I love you or hugging and kissing” are also one way of saying “thank you” instead.  She requested them to say “I love you, Kapitan” and they were all very excited and said “I love you, Kapitan” and the Brgy. Chairman, Hon. Adonis B. Manuel faced them with a smile and in return, he said also, “I love you, too”.  Then each of them said “I love you” to the person seated beside them.  After this, they dared the resource speaker also to say “I love you, Kapitan” and she did it.  Then after that, they requested her to kiss him and she kissed him with a friendly kiss on his left cheek and they were very, very happy.  The resource speaker appreciated too much with the reactions of the participants.

Another topic that aroused the interest of the group was the discussion on “Be considerate and be flexible”.  She told them that they must see to it if their companion is in the mood or not before they will make a joke with them. One barangay council said that supposed to be, all husbands and wives attended the seminar so that they will be enlightened with all the topics.

It was a cloudy day and it rained when the group was on their way.  Though it was raining, the students were still excited to go to Caribquib.  The rain stopped when they were in Marcos, Ilocos Norte.  The advisers and the manager noticed the sacrifices of the students to help in the continuous tree planting activity because though it was raining and got wet, they were still happy.

When the group was still in the city proper, the driver suddenly turned the truck in a gasoline station.  Prof. Utleg thought that they will fill the gasoline tank but with her amazed, she noticed Mr. Calaramo went down immediately and went to the group at the back.  Then the driver let the adviser to fasten her belt then they continued the journey.
When they reached Paraiso ti Caribquib, they brought down all the flowering plants (birds of paradise, laya-laya or langkwas) and planted them along the way going to the cottages.  Some of the plants have flowers already.  The group had their snacks after they planted all the plants.

Utleg.  Upon reaching Paraiso ti Caribquib, the Adviser went immediately to the seedling bed.  She was surprised when she saw that the Eleven (11) kilos seeds of Rambutan they sowed on October 9, 2011 grew already.  She measured the seedlings and they are already Six (6) inches in height.  Then she went also to monitor the fruit bearing trees as well as the flowering plants and she was very happy that some have already flowers.

When the group of students enrolled in Ecotourism subject from Northern Christian College (NCC) saw the group of students from Northwestern, they told them that they wanted also to experience to plant because they are enrolled in Ecotourism.  She called Mr. Michael Calaramo, the Manager of Ecotourism Park and Botanical Garden of Northwestern University.  She informed that students from NCC would like to plant and the latter instructed her to let them get langkwas plants along the road going to Banna proper so she accompanied them.  They put the plants in sacks.
When the group of students enrolled in Ecotourism subject from Northern Christian College (NCC) saw the group of students from Northwestern, they told them that they also wanted to experience planting because they are also enrolled in Ecotourism.  The attention of Mr. Michael Calaramo, the Manager of Ecotourism Park and Botanical Garden of Northwestern University was called,  that students from NCC would also  like to plant and the latter instructed them to get langkwas plants along the road going to Banna proper so she accompanied them.  They put the plants in sacks.


They planted the langkwas at the northern side of the road going to the zipline.  The students were very happy with their experience. They told that they do not have Tree Planting program in their school.  They wore their T-shirt printed with Ecotourism BSTHRT.  They took a group picture before they went home. When they reached Caribquib Barangay Hall, the Brgy. Chairman, Hon. Adonis B. Manuel, welcomed them with a sweet smile.  The Barangay Officials offered them to take breakfast.  Prof. Utleg blessed the food.  After the breakfast, the group asked permission from the Bgy. Chairman that they will go to Paraiso to monitor the seedlings and plants.

They roamed around the Paraiso to monitor the seedlings and flowering plants they had planted during the previous months. The group found out that all the fruit bearing trees survived and some of the flowering plants have now flowers.
 
That day was the second day of Caribquib Barangay Fiesta.  There was a part of the program for the presentation of Northwestern University.  Romelyn dela Cruz, the CTESO President, Mariecris Duldulao, the CTESO Treasurer and Cherry Mae Ranga, the ASTER President, rendered a song entitled, “I Can”.


The adviser was surprised when she saw the Philippine Serpent Eagle with another eagle which smaller were put already in the big cage that is located at the southern part of the road going to Paraiso proper.  When the bigger eagle saw them, it flew and flew and it seemed it was very happy and was shouting so the group was trying to let it more happy by answering its shouts by shouts also.  Cherry Mae Ranga went up to the cage to see if the eagles have something to eat and water to drink.  The bigger eagle was given by Mrs. Myrna Gonzales from Macayepyep and the smaller was given from a folk of Bangsar, Banna, Ilocos Norte.  The adviser told the group that the eagles are signs of progress.
Prof. Flordelina B. Utleg, delivered her Introduction of the Guest Speaker in Ilocano because the Bgy. Chairman requested her to use Ilocano dialect.  The audience was very attentive listening to her.  Before she presented the Guest Speaker, she asked permission from the audience composed of thousands of people to allow her to deliver a poem.  During the delivery of her poem, she noticed that the guest speaker had a very sweet smile looking at her with his seatmates and also she heard positive comments from the people near her.


The night of that day, Prof. Flordelina B. Utleg, delivered her Introduction of the Guest Speaker in Ilocano because the Bgy. Chairman requested her to use Ilocano language.  The audience was very attentive listening to her.  Before she asked to stand the Guest Speaker, she asked permission from the audience which composed of thousands of people to allow her to deliver a poem first.  During the delivery of her poem, she noticed that the guest speaker had a very sweet smile looking at her with his seatmates and also she heard positive comments from the people near her.

After the raffle draw, the group from Northwestern University headed by Prof. Flordelina B. Utleg was called in front to award the Certificates of Attendance to the Barangay Officials who attended the Seminar on Personality Development which was held on October 15, 2011.  Cherry Mae Ranga read the contents of the certificates before they handed to the participants.

During the distribution of certificates, they requested the adviser to conduct another seminar on Personality Development again because they learned a lot from it.  They told her that they cannot forget the words, “I love you” to tell to people they love and to their friends and to hug and kiss them.  Some hugged and kissed her with all their hearts.  The group handed all the certificates of the pupils and students who participated during the tree planting activities and the adviser told the Principal of Caribquib Elementary School, Mrs. Vilma Delos Reyes Bagay, that she will award the certificates during their Recognition Day.

There was a dance competition in “Kendeng-kendeng” by the different “Puroks”.  Mr. Eddie Paguirigan, a balikbayan, put P500.00 in front in some of the groups when they performed and gave P1,000.00 to other groups and some loving people also added amounts to it.

Hon. Adonis B. Manuel delivered the Closing Remarks.  He thanked also Northwestern University in helping his own barangay most especially in developing “Paraiso.”  He requested that Northwestern University will continue its community extension services to them so that Paraiso ti Caribquib will be visited by more tourists.
 
Before Mayor Abadilla went home, he went to the group of Prof. Utleg with all his smiles. The Mayor asked Prof. Utleg first if when they will come again to Paraiso.  She said that she is planning to go again  on January 21, 2011 to plant santan plants and salaysay plants. Then he asked her about the President of Northwestern University, “How is Liza?”  She answered that she is fine and so good in running the educational institution. Then he asked again about Col. Willy Nicolas and Col. Roy Nicolas.  She said that she rarely see them and told him that maybe they are busy with their other businesses. 


During their conversation, one member of the group took a picture on them and after their conversation, the members went with them to have picture taking. The Mayor was jokingly said with them, “Ah its better if I will carry your adviser” and the members laughed.  Romelyn was complaining that she is hardly seen in the group, so the Mayor told her that she will stay between the adviser and him and Romelyn smiled.  Lastly, she requested that they will have picture taking through her cellphone.  Eyes of people were on them during the picture taking.
Hon. Adonis B. Mr.  Michael Calaramo, the Manager of the Botanical Garden of Northwestern University, promised to Prof. Utleg on the night of December 21, 2011 that he will go with them but unfortunately, he was not able fulfill his promised.
Before Mayor Abadilla went home, he went to the group of Prof. Utleg to ask when they would come again to Paraiso.  She said that they will go back when the proposal for livelihood program ( hair cutting, making flower décor, nail arting) will be approved.


Barangay Kagawad, Rolando Ranga and Barangay Chairman, Hon. Adonis B. Manuel, dropped them by in Laoag City.  The group greeted the Chairman a happy birthday by singing the “Happy Birthday” song when they were on their way to Laoag.  He thanked them with all his heart and wished that Northwestern University will not stop in helping them.

The Barangay Fiesta was indeed a very successful one.  The group was well entertained.  They never got hungry because they always offered snacks and meals. It was a very great and unforgettable experience for the CTE-SO officers and adviser.
