History of Camiguin, Philippines

Old Spanish documents indicate that the renowned explorers, Ferdinand Magellan and Miguel Lopez de Legaspi landed in Camiguin in 1565, respectively. The first Spanish settlements in what was later to be known as Guinsiliban as established in 1598. Guinsiliban comes from the old Kinamiguin word " Guinsilipan" which means to look out for pirates from a "Watch tower." An old Spanish watchtower where the Camiguinous kept watch for Moro pirates still stands in Guinsiliban.

The first major Spanish settlement established in 1679 was called Katagman of Katadman (known now as Catarman). This settlement grew and prospered to what is now Barangay Bonbon. On May 1,1871, Mt. Vulcan Daan erupted and destroyed the town. A portion of the town center is presently located. Today, all that remains of old Catarman are the ruins of the ancient Spanish church, a convent and a bell tower.

Sagay, located south of Catarman, was formally established as a town in 1848. The word Sagay is derived from the name of a poisonous fruit tree that grew in the area.

Mambajao became a town in 1855. The name was coined from the Visayan term " Mamahaw," meaning to usher breakfast and "bajao," which is leftover boiled rice. In the early 1900s, Mambajao prospered to become the busiest port in Northern Mindanao.

Mahinog was established as a Municipality in 1860. the name Mahinog comes from a Cebuano word meaning "to ripen" or to become ripe." Although Guinsiliban was the oldest settlement in the island, it was only in 1950 when it became a Municipality. Both Mahinog and Guinsiliban were formally governed by Sagay. | back to top

American Period

In 1901, in the middle of Spanish-American War (1898-1904), American soldiers landed in Camiguin to assume political control over the island. A group of Camiguinous, armed with "bolos and spears", led by Valero Camaro fought for the island's independence from foreign invasion during a short battle in Catarman. A bullet on the forehead killed Valero Camaro. He became unsung Camiguin patriot of the early independence movement.

In 1903, the first public school in Camiguin was built in Mambajao and in 1904, the first public water system was installed. On June 18,1942, the Japanese Imperial army landed in Camiguin and set a government in Mambajao. The Japanese army gutted down central Mambajao in reprisal to guerrilla there remains of some of these buildings still exist today.

Independence Era

On July 4 1946, the country gained independence from the United States of America and became the Republic of the Philippines. From 1946 to 1958, Camiguin was part of the Province of Misamis Oriental. In 1958, it became a Sub-Province and in 1968, a full-fledged Province with Mambajao as its capital.

Post-Independence Years: 1948-1951

From 1948 to 1951, Mt. Hibok-hibok constantly rumbled and smoked. Its minor eruption in 1948 caused little damage and loss of life. In 1949, its eruption caused 79 deaths due to landslides. In the morning of December 4, 1951, the volcano erupted again. This time, however, its unleased boiling lave, poisonous gases, and landslides enough to destroy nearly 19 square kilometers of lands particularly in Mambajao. All in all, over 3,000 people were killed.

Before eruption of Mt Hibok-hibok in 1951, the population of Camiguin had reached 69,000.. After the eruption, the population was reduced to about 34,000 due to massive out-migration.

Camiguin was part of Misamis Oriental until 1958 when it became a sub-province. It was made into a separate province on June 18, 1966, but was formally inaugurated only in 1968.

  • KATIBAWASAN FALLS

(Located: 5 kms southeast of Mambajao):
A beautiful, clear stream of water cascading 70 meters into a rock pool surrounded by ground orchids, wild ferns, tress and boulders. Its cold water provides a refreshing summer splash to bathers and picnickers. For the more adventurous it is possible to rappel down the waterfall into the plunge pool below.

  • TUASAN FALLS

(Located 6 kms northeast of Catarman):
The approach to the wild and mighty falls entails a very scenic hike passing through the quaint Barrio of Mainit, Catarman and along the rocky river bed. The pool below the waterfalls is deep and clear. The surrounding scenery is unspoiled and perfect for a peaceful picnic, the only sounds around you is that of the tumbling falls and running water.

  • BURA SODA WATER SWIMMING POOL

(Located: Bura, Catarman):
The one and only in the country where you can swim to a poll of soda water. It has great scenery over the fields and the seas as its cold water provide a refreshing splash to bathers and picnickers. Picnic huts and tables are available beside the pool.

  • ESPERANZA ARDENT HOT SPRING

(Located: 6 kms Southwest of Mambajao):
In the heart of the island bubbles this mineral pool with water around 40 degress Celsius. Mist rises from the heated waters that run down the vents of the dormant Hibok-Hibok volcano. The springs are ideal to bathe in at night surrounded by cool mountain air. It has therapeutic effects. Picnic huts and tables are available in the beautifully landscaped gardens and there is a restaurant on site.

  • MOUNT HIBOK-HIBOK - entry is through the base of Barangay Tagdo in Mambajao. It is the only active volcano among the seven others in the island; the 1,250 meters slope is a challenge even to professional climbers as a trek entails skillful maneuvers in loose rocks and boulders. A crater lake and stream serve as outlets in many places at the peak, and a clear view of the entire island and Bohol can be seen on clear days.
  • STO. NIÑO COLD SPRING

(Located 4 kms north of central Catarman):
It has a terrific huge pool of cold spring water measuring 25m x 40m sprouting from sandy bottom. The area has native stores, picnic huts and toilets picnickers.

  • TANGUB HOT SPRING

(Located 12 kms west of Mambajao):
A volcanic hot spring below the sea bed. The small area is formed by a pool of sea stones and corals and is completely undeveloped. Water temperatures turn from cold to lukewarm, warm and hot as the tide changes. Sit in the water at lowish tide and enjoy the cold sea water as it mixes with the hot spring. Scuba diving is also good about 10-20m offshore with a gradual drop-off.

  • MACAO COLD SPRING

(Located in Tupsan Pequeño, Mahino):
Once you are near the spot, you will be amazed by the crystal blue coloured water. The pool is surrounded by huge trees, some of theme are more than century old.

  • TANGUINES LAGOON

(Located in Benoni, Mahinog):
A man-made lagoon mantled by limpid water, large cliffs and gently rolling hills. An ideal place to hire a boat and go fishing for the day.

  • OLD VULCAN

(Located 13 kms west of Mambajao):
The old volcano drops into the sea and makes a natural road high above the ocean. The place has a sheer drop-off of 80 meters; ledge shallow water and rocks to sit on and sunbathe. Rich corals abound in the ocean below.

  • WHITE ISLAND

Located 2 kms across the sea from Agoho and Yumbing):
An uninhabited white sandbar with the picturesque Mt. Hibok-Hibok and Old Volcano as its backdrop. The picturesque island is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling and viewing the sunrise and sunset over Camiguin.

  • MANTIGUE ISLAND

(Located 3 kms offshore across from Hubangon and San Roque in Mahinog):
The island is 4 hectares of evergreen forest, fringed with white granule sand beaches. A fishing village is found in the north of the island. One side of the island is a white sand beach with coral offshore, and the other opposite side provides a deep drop-off for snorkeling and diving. One gets there by light water craft in 25-30 minutes from San Roque, Mahinog.

Kaya Iloilo sweeps Group B in Copa '21

MANILA – Kaya Iloilo pipped Mendiola with a 6-0 beating on Wednesday night to complete a sweep of Group B action in the Copa Paulino Alcantara at the PFF National Training Centre in Carmona.

A Jovin Bedic brace in the first half set the tone for the inaugural tournament champ even as the club netted three goals in each of the two halves to seal the top seed in its group ahead of the semifinals next week.

Bedic capitalized on an erroneous Mendiola attempt to keep the ball out of his reach and quickly raced inside the penalty box to open the scoring for Kaya Iloilo in the 11th minute.

Probe team eyes pilot error, weather as causes of crash

PLANE crash investigators are looking at the possibility of pilot error as the cause of an accident in Mambajao, Camiguin last Sunday.

SPO2 German Abian of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) told ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol that the investigation team will also look at bad weather as a factor in the crash of the Cessna 172 of Aviatour Flyin’ Inc.

The Aircraft Accident and Investigation Board of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) sent investigators to Mambajao, Camiguin and to the Aviatour office in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu to find out the cause of the plane crash, which killed a tourist and the aircraft’s pilot, and injured three others.

Ruth Orillaneda, finance officer of Aviatour, said the company will shoulder the funeral expenses of Racquel Strande and pilot Christian Cesar Cebrecus and the hospitalization of Racquel’s husband Lars, their three-year-old child and student pilot Nurmala Dewi.

CAAP Director General Ramon Gutierez ordered the investigation on the incident involving the four-seater Cessna, which plowed a patch of coconut trees near the airport in Camiguin.

Orillaneda told reporters that this was the first major incident involving Aviatour.

The CAAP office at Mactan Cebu International Airport, under officer-in-charge Agnes Undang, did not answer attempts by Sun.Star Cebu to get updates on the plane crash investigation.

Jessup Bahinting, owner of Aviatour, told told Sun.Star Cebu that the company will issue a statement after the CAAP investigation is completed.

He assured foreign and local tourists, as well as student pilots, that all Aviatour aircraft have undergone safety inspection and are certified safe.

Portfolio

With a fleet of more than 35 aircraft and a workforce of more than 70 employees, Aviatour provides aerial tours and chartered flights to Tagbilaran, Bantayan and Camotes Islands, Surigao, Siargao and Masbate, among others.

In a related development, two Aviatour aircraft fetched the remains of Racquel and Cebrecus.

Cebrecus was a nursing graduate at the Cebu Doctor’s University but pursued his dream to become a pilot. His family is planning to have his body cremated and bring his remains to his hometown in Samar.

Racquel’s remains were brought to their home in Toledo City by her mother, Encarnacion delos Santos. After four days, her remains will be brought back to the Cosmopolitan Funeral Homes in Lahug, Cebu City to be turned over to Lars.
