One of the Featured Municipalities in the Philippines Municipality Building of Talavera Talavera, Nueva Ecija Telephone Numbers: +63 44 411 1977 The town of Talavera was formerly a barrio of Cabanatuan City. It was called “Katugian” which means a place abounding in “Tugue” an edible root crop. The distance between Cabanatuan City and Katugian was critical during the early phase of its development although it was only 15 km. The cura párroco at that time recommended to the Spanish administrators a separate and independent administration of Katugian. By a royal decree issued on November 12, 1852, the plan making Katugian a town was approved. There was no formal inauguration of the new town in accordance with the royal decree. However, the Augustian cura párroco of Cabanatuan, Fr. Gregorio Crisostomo, appointed the first officials of the town by sending his co-adjudor, a certain Pedro Estanislao Pascual, to handle the religious phase of the administration of the new town during Sundays and Holidays only. A 13-year battle between church and state in the Philippines, one of the world's most devoutly Catholic nations, has come to a head over government plans to provide free condoms and sex education. Catholic bishops have threatened to excommunicate President Benigno Aquino over a reproductive health bill introduced into the Congress yesterday.

As well as the powerful church, Mr Aquino is opposed by one of the most popular figures in the Philippines, the world champion boxer turned congressman Manny Pacquiao.

Mr Pacquiao said this week that he would never have been born, or become a champion, if his parents had used contraception. "God said go forth and multiply," he declared. "He did not say just go and have one or two children."...Full Story »

• Remittance growth slows to 4.1% in March to $1.6B

MANILA, Philippines—Remittances rose further, albeit at a slower pace, in March as the impact of the continued deployment of Filipino workers to alternative labor markets offset the ill-effects of the recent disaster in Japan and the unrest in the Middle East on employment offshore.

The growth in remittances even during a tough period gave comfort to the government that inflows of money from overseas-based Filipinos would remain strong throughout the year, thus continue supporting consumption of domestic households.

Documents from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas showed that remittances in March amounted to $1.6 billion, rising 4.1 percent from $1.55 billion in the same month last year...Full Story »

MANILA – Kaya Iloilo pipped Mendiola with a 6-0 beating on Wednesday night to complete a sweep of Group B action in the Copa Paulino Alcantara at the PFF National Training Centre in Carmona.

A Jovin Bedic brace in the first half set the tone for the inaugural tournament champ even as the club netted three goals in each of the two halves to seal the top seed in its group ahead of the semifinals next week.

Bedic capitalized on an erroneous Mendiola attempt to keep the ball out of his reach and quickly raced inside the penalty box to open the scoring for Kaya Iloilo in the 11th minute.

It's not only the DILG incorrectly categorizing Zamboanga City as within Zamboanga del Sur. The following government offices are also ignorant: NSCB, COMELEC, PIA (Philippine Information Agency), even the office of the President of the Philippines!
