Nestled among the hills and mountains in the southeastern part of the Province of Ilocos Norte is the small and peaceful town of Banna, a fifth class municipality of about sixteen thousand (16,000) inhabitants.  This little town has its modest beginnings in 1837.  Before that time, it was  wilderness where a few Tinguian tribes roamed and lived.  Among the first inhabitants and recognized leader was BANA , the father of a rather big family who led the men in their hunts and adventures.  He could shoot with the bow and arrow better than any other man.  He was the strongest in his village.

==Businesses in Banna, Ilocos Norte, Philippines==
As years passed, the small clearings occupied by these inhabitants were gradually enlarged.  People from different towns of the province in search of adventure moved to the place.  Prominent among the early settlers were the Cabaoig, Paned, the Gay-ya and the Dulig families.  A little later, more people came here until 1837, the town of Banna (Espiritu) with a population of about two thousand was formed. Credit is due to Father Cuarteron, an old friar of the Catholic Church of Dingras, who moved to his town and organized it into what is now called BANNA (ESPIRITU).
*We invite you to list your business located in Banna.

Attracted by the founding of the town and the stories of the vast tracks of idle lands, the people of the different towns of the province came to establish new homes in Banna (Espiritu).  The Alegres of Paoay and Laoag, the Maulits of Batac, the Magnos, Espiritus and Valencianos of Dingras, the Balas of San Nicolas and many other families greatly increased the population.  The Pablo, Rigonan and Baga families also came to live here.

The people of Banna (Espiritu) have several intonations due to the presence in the community of people who came from different places.

In 1903, by an executive order of the Governor-General, the small town of Banna (Espiritu) was annexed to Batac.  In 1913, however, after ten years, Banna (Espiritu) again became an independent municipality.  Credit goes to Don Ismael Valenciano who worked for its separation from Batac, and he became the first Presidente Municipal.

By present indications, the town of Banna (Espiritu) is bound to become one of the busiest and most prosperous towns in Ilocos Norte.  What the future holds in store for Banna (Espiritu) lies not so much in its land resources as it is on its people. They constitute the brawn, the intelligence and the heart in the over-all development progress of the town.  The true spirit of Banna (Espiritu)tiran…industrious, cooperative, patriotic and strong-willed steers the town on the direction towards the vision of BANNA (ESPIRITU) 2002…

Municipality of Banna (Espiritu), Ilocos Norte is geographically located at coordinates between 120º 36 minutes - 120º 39 minutes east longitude and 17º 56 minutes north latitude; at the southeastern part of the Province of Ilocos Norte; 38 kilometers from Laoag City.  It is bounded east by Nueva Era, on the west by Batac, on the north by Marcos, and on the south by Nueva Era and Pinili(Banna (Espiritu) Administration, 2011).

PANAG-ABUOS FESTIVAL OF BANNA (ESPIRITU)

The festival of Banna (Espiritu) is celebrated every 1st - 3rd day of April and called it PANAG-ABUOS FESTIVAL. Panag-buos is an Ilocano term which means “time for abuos”.  Abuos is a kind of big ant that lay eggs and it is a delicious exotic food. They live in trees located in the hills and mountains around the town proper as well as in the rural areas.

There are specific trees in the forest where these abuos weave leaves for them to lay eggs. They usually lay eggs occasionally during the month of April.

PANAG-ABUOS FESTIVAL includes variety of activities. Every Saturday of March, there is a singing competition and they called it “Samiweng.”  Samiweng is a local dialect of Banna (Espiritu) for love songs. The judges usually come from the different towns, cities or provinces. Among the contestants, there are only five (5) to be chosen for the grand finals. The Grand Finals is being held on the last day of the town fiesta.

The Champion is given the biggest cash prize and tallest trophy while the others receive smaller amount of money and trophy.  This is done after the Coronation Night of Miss/Mrs. Balikbayan and Miss Banna (Espiritu).

On the 1st day of April, there is a Search for Miss/Mrs. Balikbayan which is a popularity contest.  Contestants come from different countries where former native of Banna (Espiritu) resides now. They called it Balikbayan Night. Balikbayan is a local dialect used to refer to people from Banna (Espiritu) who migrated to different countries who are coming back for vacation.  The contestant who drops the highest amount of money will be the Miss/Mrs. Balikbayan which is called The Queen. Her royal court will compose of First Princess, Second Princess, Third Princess and Fourth Princess. Each will be given a sash, bouquet and trophy during the coronation.

On the 2nd day of April, there is a Search for Miss Banna (Espiritu) which is a Beauty and Brain contest.  The lucky candidates will become Miss Banna (Espiritu) - The Queen, First Princess, Second Princess, Third Princess and Fourth Princess. Each will receive cash, sash, bouquet and trophy on the coronation night which is being held on the last night of the town fiesta.
During the celebration, they also present the different ethnic dances and their own folk dance –  Surtido Banna (Espiritu) and sometimes they sing the folksong- Banna (Espiritu)tiran. Banna (Espiritu)tiran is a kind of bird which has silky brown feather with dotted white on its breast.

On the last day, the Miss/Mrs. Balikbayan and Miss Banna (Espiritu) with their princesses will ride on a float to have their parade around the town proper.  Some of the different candidates will throw candies to the people on the streets who are watching them.

During the festival, they usually sing the Banna (Espiritu) Hymn before they start any program to show their love and loyalty to their beloved town.

Every May 2nd of the year, the Summer Sports Fest begins.  This is done every day until the last day of the month. The Championship Game is also held on the last day.. It is held at the Multi-Purpose Hall of Banna (Espiritu). Basketball tournament is for men while volleyball is for women. This is sponsored by the municipality of Banna (Espiritu). Brief Profile of  Barangay Caribquib

*Barangay Caribquib, one of the twenty barangays of Banna (Espiritu), Ilocos Norte, is located on the north part of the municipality.  It is found three kilometers north of the poblacion. It is bounded on the south by Barangay Valenciano of the same municipality, on the north by Barangay Fortuna, Marcos, Ilocos Norte, on the west by Barangay Barbarangay, another barangay of Banna (Espiritu) and on the east by Barangay Tabtabagan, Banna (Espiritu), Ilocos Norte. It has a total land area of six hundred  hectares ( 600 ha.).
*Barangay Caribquib  is composed of the following sitios: Caribquib Proper, Dispensa, San Juan, Nanamburan and Daramuangan. These sitios are far from each other.
*This barangay was established in 1913 when Banna (Espiritu) became a regular municipality after it was separated from the Municipality of Batac, Ilocos Norte.
*The original families were those of Pedro Valentino, Tranquilino Dimaya and Apolonio Dizol. The earliest tenientes del barrio were: Tranquilino Dimaya, Francisco Ramones, Herminigildo Valentino, Blas Braceros, Valentin Limet, Saturnino Tabucbuc, Francisco Aspili, Aurelio Romualdo, Mardonio Quimoyog, Paulino Lumbo, Fermin Valentino and Januario Pascua.

A popular local story also provides for the origin of the barangay’s name:
*It is said that long time ago, the place was covered with thick forests and plenty of grasses. But when the early settlers practiced kaingin (slash and burn agriculture), the trees disappeared and the grasses dried up. Animals had to feed on scanty and dried grass. However, there was a certain place on the side of a hill where stunted grasses grew. It was there where the people gazed their animals. Since there were only few grasses, the animals had to kibkib (to consume bit by bit) the grasses. It is believed that this caused the people to name the place Caribquib.
*The barangay has sprawling agricultural lands, forests and creeks. Farming is the primary occupation of the people whose main crops are rice, garlic, tobacco and onions. Aside from the farmers, many of the people in the place work as teachers, employees, businessmen and balikbayans.
*A public elementary school and a national secondary school are situated in the barangay and these institutions serve as the educational grounds for the barangay’s young children and learners.
*Barangay Caribquib is one of the most agriculturally productive barangays of the municipality contributing to food security and to the economic prosperity in the locality.
*Owing to the culture of the place and in keeping with tradition the residents of Barangay Caribquib are an industrious, frugal and disciplined people. This can be manifested by an above-average and more affluent lifestyle enjoyed by the barangay’s inhabitants.
*Because of the existence of an elementary and secondary school within the barangay, there is a higher rate of literacy among the people. And as a barangay situated along a major road, the Ilocos Norte- Abra National Highway, there is a greater opportunity for the barangay’s learners to pursue post secondary and tertiary level education. Thus, there is a higher ratio of college graduates and professionals than is usually found in the more remote barangays of the municipality.
*Barangay Caribquib has also attained other areas of distinction in the municipality. Owing to a diligent , dedicated and committed barangay government headed by equally diligent, dedicated and committed barangay officials, Barangay Caribquib has attained the distinction of winning ( three – time Champion , Category A) the municipality’s OPLAN SALUKAG PROGRAM ( Operation Plan: Saluadam Lugar Ken Aglawlaw), an environmental program and competition initiated and conducted annually by the Local  Government of Banna (Espiritu). Likewise, Barangay Caribquib  has been a consistent winner ( three-time 1ST Place Awardee) of the CARLY AWARDS Community Acclaimed Rural Legislators of the Year Awards) also held annually in the municipality.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND COST:

*The Banna (Espiritu) Zipline Project is located in the Paraiso ti Caribquib, in particular, on the sprawling forest area and creek on the western part of  Barangay Caribquib, at Sitio Daramuangan.
*At first the banks along the creek of the Paraiso ti Caribquib was just an alternative site for a picnic for those who had had enough of the sun and water afforded by the town’s rivers , and the soaring hills and forests around the creek as another destination for a trek for the more adventurous type.
*The Sitio of Daramuangan wherein can be found the Paraiso ti Caribquib became the venue of a Walk for a Cause conducted in the Year of 2007 by the Roman Catholic Church -Parish of San Roque . Likewise, a Mass and a Thanksgiving Service was held at the same venue, with the presence of  the Diocesian Bishop Sergio Utleg. Then Municipal Mayor, Honorable CARLITO A. ABADILLA II attended both events and saw the area’s potential.
*It is noteworthy to mention at this juncture that the Municipality of Banna (Espiritu), Ilocos Norte represented by then Municipal Mayor Honorable CARLITO A. ABADILLA II witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement for the development of a one hundred-hectare ( 100 ha.) area under a co-management scheme with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) of ILOCOS NORTE and the Barangay Council of Caribquib represented by Punong Barangay Adonis Manuel for eco-tourism cum forest protection purposes.
*Wishing to start developing the site, the Barangay Government of  Caribquib and its constituents, through self-help, built a handful of cottages on one side of the creek.
*But it was through the stroke of genius of Honorable Carly Abadilla II, then at the helm of the Local Government of Banna (Espiritu), and greatly inspired to develop the area as an eco-tourism venture and as a premier destination for  pleasure and recreation for people, vacationers and visitors that the  Paraiso ti Caribquib became famous and a destination of choice.
*With an allocation from the Banna (Espiritu) Municipal Fund, the Banna (Espiritu) Zipline Project, the first ever to be built and installed in the whole Province of Ilocos Norte ,became a reality. To complement the exhilarating experience derived from a heart-stopping ride at the Zipline, a Hanging Bridge was built by the Local Government Of Banna (Espiritu), Ilocos Norte  near the Zipline. This hanging bridge induces  the same adrenaline- producing experience given by the Zipline.
*Due to the daily large number of people visiting the Paraiso and wishing to ride the Zipline and walk on the Hanging Bridge, the Barangay Government of Caribquib installed additional cottages along the banks at a cost of Twenty Five Thousand Pesos and landscaped the areas in the site for added attraction. Donations from other sources greatly helped to improve the area.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

*To date there are now five (5) cottages built and owned by the Barangay Government of Caribquib , and four (4) built and owned by each of  four sitios of the barangay. An area of the forest has been cleared to serve as  parking space for vehicles carrying visitors to the area.
*The Barangay Government of Caribquib manages the operation of the Paraiso Ti Caribquib Resort, including the Zipline , Hanging Bridge and other facilities in the site.

For those wishing to visit the Paraiso Ti Caribquib avail of  its facilities at the following cost: :
*Cottage Fee:  Php 200.00 / cottage/day
*Entrance Fee: Php 5.00 per head
*Zipline:      Php 50.00/ride

The Project Management Staff of Bagnos Multi-purpose Cooperative in the town of Banna (Espiritu), Ilocos Norte is brewing a very famous beverage, and its aroma hints a lucrative enterprise.

The B.A.G.N.O.S (Bassit a Ganansia Naurnong Omado Sanikua) MPC was organized on October 28, 2000 and registered with the Cooperative Development Authority on December 21, 2000. Starting from a very small membership of 12 and measly capital of P4,457, Bagnos MPC has served as an agent of change in the locality where poverty was a common spectacle. Now, it has 355 members from barangays Binacag and other barangays of Banna (Espiritu), Nueva Era and Laoag City.

Originally just a credit facility and a consumer store for its members, it has expanded its services to palay trading, goat raising and hog fattening; and on January 22, 2008, the Bagnos MPC set out for yet another major undertaking- Rice Coffee Production. Just goes to prove that the right blend of strong teamwork, dedication, vision, quality & competitiveness and the right help can lead to success.

The Department of Labor & Employment (DOLE) Region 1, under Director Henry John Jalbuena, through its Poverty-Free Zone Program granted the cooperative the amount of PhP895,500.00 for the purchase of equipment and materials for rice coffee production. Since then, what used to be just a homegrown tradition of rice coffee preparation among Ilocanos, has become a main enterprise in the community that is now generating employment and income for locals and a tourist attraction.

The Product

lend is a very competitive product for its truly exotic, natural and nutritive value, all in a cheap price! It is made of all natural raw materials. It has no preservatives and no caffeine, and considered a good remedy for gas pain, ulcer and liver problems. The rice consists of fiber, Vitamin B, protein and carbohydrate. The soya is known for its high protein content, vitamins, minerals, fibers and "isoflavones" which are useful in preventing osteoporosis and controlling menopausal disorders. It can also help prevent breast cancer, and may prevent or slow prostate cancer growth in men.

The association uses the principle of time and motion to avoid wastage of resources and to systematize workflow. The raw materials pass through a strict step-by-step process to ensure quality control.

Banna (Espiritu) has 12,800 hectares agricultural land planted to rice with annual yield of 5.25 tons per hectare during the first cropping; 2nd cropping, 40%. Moreover, the cooperative is also engaged in palay trading, which ensures the availability of the raw material for the product. On the other hand, some barangays in the municipality like Sinamar, Tabtabagan and Binacag are producing 3 tons of soya beans per hectare, out of 50 hectares of land. Further, the project site is just a few kilometers away from the towns of Solsona and Dingras, the biggest producers of rice in the Province of Ilocos Norte.

Promotions

Due to the product's competitive quality and comparatively cheaper price, big Trade Fairs such as the Agraryo Trade Fair at the SM Mega Mall (June 3-8, 2008), OTOP Summer Trade Fair at the Aurora Park, Laoag City (May 12-18, 2008), among others, have opened doors for wider markets. Consistent increase in the production of the product over the past 1 year and 2 months indicates a growing demand for it.

Various shops and stores in the LGUs of Banna (Espiritu), Nueva Era and Laoag City serve as stable local markets for the coffee products. With the strong support of the LGU of Banna (Espiritu) in promoting the product, OFWs in Hawaii, Spain and London have been bringing abroad Banna (Espiritu)'s Blend by volume.

The SB of Banna (Espiritu) passed Resolution No. 2008-09 Adopting Rice Coffee as the OTOP of the LGU, and Designating the MPDO as the OTOP Coordinator (the product is a nominee for 2009 Outstanding OTOP MSME Award). Not only did the effort put more value in Banna (Espiritu)'s Blend, it was helpful in promoting it as one of the municipality's tourist attractions. True enough, with the constant efforts of the LGU of promoting tourism, the product was featured in ABS-CBN Studio 23's magazine shows Tablescapes and TNT (Trip Na Trip).

elping the association even further in establishing markets for its Rice Coffee, the LGU of Banna (Espiritu) regularly buys the product, and gives it as gifts to guests during special occasions.

To penetrate even bigger Supermarkets and groceries, the association has applied with the BFAD for Bar Code. The application is now on process.

Project Impact

All 355 members of the association are benefitting from the project through dividends. Twenty four (24) members directly benefit from it as workers, while 27 derive income through commission from sales. Members' access to health services has been enhanced through membership in SSS and Philhealth.

Aside from the DOLE as the primary source of assistance, the LGU of Banna (Espiritu) and other agencies such as the DTI and DAR are in collaborative efforts to provide comprehensive services to the association through promotional strategies and trainings.

The Cooperative's Assets

As of writing time, the cooperative's assets-including its building, equipment and other properties, working capital, capital build up, savings, receivables, etc.-have reached about PhP 4.8 million.

th Rice Coffee with Soya production as its new core business, the MPC is again building up its size and value. Only 1 year and 2 months since its actual operation in May 2008, the project's accumulated gross sales amount to PhP257,594.00 during the first 6 months and PhP326,910.00 from January 2009 to December 2009.

In an interview, Ms. Amelia Bautista, the Project Manager, said, "Banna (Espiritu) Blend is our triumph. Not only has it provided additional income for members and non-members of the cooperative, it has made coffee, a famous beverage, healthful and beneficial." (PIA)
