Quetal ustedes ali na Zamboanga? My family lived in Guisao but I went to school in Culianan. I've always felt that I belong to both communities. Like most of my neighbors, we had our shares of struggles with our daily material needs. Money was scarce. But, I thanked the Lord, my parents were always resourceful & found ways to meet our bare necessities. Truly, Need is the mother of invention. But amidst all this, hope, love and prayers abound. We dared to dream of a better life, venture out of our comfort zone and see what we could find outside this small, peaceful & happy place. Tabat is a part of Guisao before the 1st bridge (at least that's what I know as the demarcation line). That is where I grew up. We all knew each other & were up to date with what was happening in each other's household. That was made possible by the river where the women & children gathered to do laundry. It's almost an all day affair. The afternoons were left for ironing, playing Bingo or Lutiria or tending to the kaingin or veg. garden. We didn't have electricity, telephone & in my youger days,no TV. The radio was not constant because sometimes the batteries ran out & we had to wait 'til my father's payday to buy 4 3c Ever Ready batteries. There's barely anything to read either because we didn't have a public library. I missed siesta. My parents were adamant about us taking siesta after lunch. Who could take siesta when your playments were playing marbles, chinese garter, saltapina, Shatung or Bagul ? If not, we had guavas, larangha, santor, Star apple or mangga to pick. I remembered merienda, saging prito, banana-cue, chikoy, sikalang or suman de saging or suman camanting. I remebered childhood friends whom I visited unannounced & was okay: Lorna Miquel, Jessica Pantaleon.Girly & Ruby Peralta. The stores of Lola Iliang & 'Nyora Ti. Anyway, God bless Guisao & Zamboanga. May we all find what we are looking for & may we not forget to look back where we came from...and give back to the community who nurtured us & help shaped the person we became today. Best regards, TD
