I grew up in Baliwasan Grande with my sister, we moved there when my father was assigned there (Air force),my father is a native of Baliwasan Grande. It has been 20 + yrs now since I last visited this beautiful place- when we moved to Manila, a lot of my friends think Zamboanga is a dangerous place to live, not for us- Zamboangenos. Remembering the fond memories of our childhood, I went to Baliwasan Elementary school for primary schooling, I had lots of friends there, one particular is Rina Macapili- they have a sari-sari store(Baliwasan Chico) her mother makes the best "saging prito". My sister and I walked in going to school with the rest of our neighbors, there is a short cut- from Baliwasan Timex we passed thru Baliwasan Interior, I remember that place where people dumped their garbages, that's where the short cut is thru Baliwasan Chico, it was hard whenit rained. Fiesta time is usually fun, most houses celebrate the barrio fiesta, we usually have 2 pigs intended for celebration only. I remember my mother complained that after each fiesta she would lose plates and spoons/forks. People love to bring home foods too. That place where Wee Bin is now, we used to go there a lot when I was young to swim, the water is so clear and blue,if you are unlucky though you will find people used the rocky stones as their bathroom- you know what I mean. We enjoyed buying fish from the "basnigeros" right there before you get to Trade school.According to friends /family Baliwasan is now much improved- I hope the people there still embrace and practice the traditions. Viva Baliwasan.
