Information

I was born in Baliwasan as my mother and her mother and her abuela before her were. My sisters and me had our share of joining in at beladas held every bisperas del fiesta. The Patron Saint of Baliwasan is Nuestra Senora del Pilar, and today it falls on the last sunday of October. But when I was a young girl it used to be on the third sunday. In 1960, my sister was born on a fiesta day. Baliwasan is made up of three "invisible" division. There would always be three groups then whatever the occasion. During summer we had sports competition in Volleyball, Softball and Basketball. There would always be a team from Baliwasan Grande, Baliwasan Chico, and Baliwasan Interior. I come from the later, better known as Sapang Palay. Residents of Sapang Palay come from the area where Wee Bin factory is now situated. People from Seaside moved in when the land the house were built on was sold to its present owner now. There was no Agrarian Reform then. We all moved in the interior but for the family of Faisal who stood firm on their ground. I am not sure it the house is still there but when I was there 10 years ago it was. How uninformed we were then. A whole community was uprooted (not every one transferred in the interior), families who lived and loved there had to leave the place, friends and neighbors whose life was so closely interwoven with one another had to be content with occasional visit or a chance meeting somewhere else. But wherever we are, whoever we have become we always have our fondest memories of the place we called home.
